Hunter High School 2013 ELA & Math Cut off Scores

What are the cut-off scores for the ELA & Math?

For those taking the January 2014 Hunter Entrance Exam:

The qualifying cutoff score for 2014 Hunter Entrance Exam is 343 in math and a 346 in ELA. That means that your current 6th grader can take the test if he or she scored a 343 or higher in math and a 346 or higher in ELA when he or she took the test in April of 2013 (last school year, in the 5th Grade). No exceptions to this rule. Don't waste your time calling Hunter and asking to let your kid test if he or she missed it by a couple of points.

Congratulations for those of you who made it in! Kweller Prep Hunter classes start as early as Sept 21 for those interested.

Is Kweller Prep the Next Big Thing?

It never ceases to amaze me how many students and families show appreciation for the Kweller Prep program in the neighborhood. Open 7 days a week, with a nearly 100% success rate of getting middle school students into specialized high schools of their choice, and getting high school students into the colleges of their choice, Kweller Prep is certainly doing something right.

But the founder, Frances Kweller, is not a school teacher. In fact, she is a fully licensed NYS attorney, who opened Kweller Prep years ago on credit cards after seeing a gap in the education system and need in her childhood community to better understand the education system.

To date, nearly 2,000 students and families have come through her door.

Maybe it's the monthly workshops for parents.

Maybe it's the incredible amount of time spent with each admitted student.

Maybe it's that Kweller Prep, a tutoring program founded by Attorney Frances Kweller, has expanded it's educational services to include high school and college tours.

Maybe it's that the class size never exceeds 8 students.

Whatever the case, this program is effective. And one after the other, Kweller Prep kids succeed.

____

So why does it feel that Kweller Prep is working when, so many times, public and even private schools are not?

So much talk of how test prep centers are responsible for "teaching kids."

So many kids saying they learned more 1 hour with a tutor than 1 week at school.

Maybe schools should model themselves after tutoring centers?

Clearly, test prep centers like Kweller Prep are doing something right.

Sample Short Answer to the College Application

This is a simple, clean, clear response to the essay prompt. Most importantly, this essay remains in the student's voice.

___

Short Answer:

Steps Ahead is a dance studio in Howard Beach, except it taught me so much more than just dance. I blossomed at Steps Ahead, first as a student from the tender age of four years old to becoming a dance instructor myself at seventeen.  When I was younger, I used to always look up to and admire my dance teachers. As a small shy child, dance was frequently my only escape, where I could shed my shyness to embrace my confidence from within. For years, I looked forward to going to dance everyday. My teachers pushed me to become not only a better dancer, but also a better person and I will never forget all that they’ve done for me.

I was selected to attend La Guardia High School for the Performing arts, in part due to my high SHSAT test scores and moreso as a result of my excellent audition for the school’s dance team. I knew that without years of practice at Steps Ahead, I never would have made it in. That shy girl from within disappeared the day I got my acceptance letter.

As early as my freshman year of high school at La Guardia, the school dance coach recognized that I had talent. She invited me to become her assistant teacher. That very moment gave me flashbacks to all those times I spent with my teachers’ assistants and how their role as an assistant played such a made such a lasting impression in my life. I became overjoyed with the thought of stepping into their place. I have been an assistant to my dance teacher for 4 years, and it gives me great pleasure to know that I am someone who the students can look up to. This experience truly allows me to become a role model for the students. It brings a smile to my face to know that I am apart of their life in such a positive way and I hope and pray to influence them to reach their fullest potential.
