New SAT Basics

BEFORE THE NEW SAT BASICS:   You will only have a handful of chances to take the OLD SAT. We highly suggest you study all summer in 2015, take the SAT test for the first time October 2015, buy the Question and Answer Service (QAS) at www.Collegeboard.com, and review the October 2015 test entirely. Take the SAT for the second time early December 2015, order the test, order QAS, review the entire test, then take the SAT test for the third and LAST time late January 2016. Three times is just enough times to take the test.  Studies show that the more times you take the test, the more likely you are to improve your score. You should try to take the SAT by grade 9, 10, 11. Do not take waste your time testing and retesting senior year in grade 12 because you have to spend your time early of senior year applying for college.  Senior year is stressful enough and you should not spend that time taking the SAT, a test you should have taken at least 3 times by grade 11.

How to View Your SHSAT test score results- Live!

Parents I am encouraging everyone to make an easy free appointment with the Department of Education to view your child's SHSAT test and answer key. This is especially important for those who want to retake the SHSAT the following year. Here are the details sent to me froma Kweller Prep parent:

In response to your request, arrangements have been made for you and your child, XXXXX to review results from the Specialized High Schools Admission Test (SHSAT).

 

Appointment Information:

 

Your appointment can be scheduled at http://shsattestviews.setmore.com/

Please indicate if you will need a translator during your test view.  The appointment will be held at the New York City Department of Education, 131 Livingston St., Brooklyn, NY, 11201. The security staff will direct you to where the review will be held.

 

Important Information about Your Appointment:

The purpose of this meeting is to provide you with an opportunity to review a copy of the answer sheet completed on test day by your child.  This meeting will be conducted by a SHSAT Content Specialist.  If you do not wish to review the answer sheet but have other questions about the high school admissions process or eligibility for the Specialized High Schools, there is no need to schedule the appointment.  For these questions only, you may contact Ingrid Wong, Office of Student Enrollment, at HS_Enrollment@schools.nyc.gov.

 

Your son/daughter must be present at the review and must be accompanied by one or two parent(s)/guardian(s). We cannot conduct the review without at least one parent or guardian present. One hour has been allotted for the test review.  Only your son/daughter and parent(s)/guardian(s) will be allowed at the appointment.

 

Special Arrangements:

If you need to cancel or reschedule the appointment, please email SHSATtestviews@schools.nyc.gov as soon as possible. You may only reschedule your appointment once due to unforeseen circumstances, such as illness or an emergency. No exceptions will be made.

 

Please bring this letter with you to the appointment and show it to the security staff at the front desk in the Department of Education. If you have any questions, please contact Lucia Figueras.

Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP)

Each year since 1990, STEP has helped 100 to 150 high school students to prepare for college programs in science- or health-related fields. The Program provides instruction and developmental courses, SAT preparation, tutoring, counseling, college/university tours and cultural trips. Supported by State funding, the success of STEP at the Brooklyn Campus can be measured by the rate of its graduates who go to college within one year after high school — 100%!
