SHSAT CHANGES

Good morning Parents, We at Kweller Prep hope that your new year has been fantastic! As many of you know, the New York City Department of Education will be changing the format of the October 2017 SHSAT, the exam used for admission to NYC's prestigious Specialized High Schools. The exact changes have just recently been released.  The major changes include the exclusion of Scrambled Paragraphs and Logical Reasoning questions previously found in the Verbal Section, as well as an increase in standard testing time from 150 minutes to 180 minutes. There are no scheduled breaks during the exam, and students will need to choose how to partition their time between the sections as they best see fit. All multiple-choice questions will now have 4 answer choices, as opposed to the previous 5 choices given.  The Verbal Section is being renamed the English Language Arts Section (ELA) and will have a total of 57 questions. It will now include questions that address the revision of sentences and paragraphs, as well as traditional questions that test reading comprehension. There will be 20 revision questions and 37 reading comprehension questions. Of these 57 questions, only 47 questions will be scored, with the other 10 serving as incognito field test questions that will not be counted towards the score.  The Mathematics Section will also consist of 57 questions, 52 of which will be multiple-choice and 5 of which will be grid-in questions. For these new grid-in questions, students must solve a computational question and provide the correct numerical answer, rather than selecting the answer from various multiple choice options. Of these 57 questions, only 47 questions will be scored, with the other 10 serving as incognito field test questions that will not be counted towards the score. ** Please view this link for more detailed information: SHSAT 2017 CHANGES** As Kweller Prep aims to provide the most comprehensive test preparation, we will align our current and future SHSAT courses to the new SHSAT format.
