Kweller Prep Hunter prep courses start October 11, 2014
THE HCHS ENTRANCE EXAM FOR FALL 2015 ADMISSION WILL BE GIVEN ON FRIDAY, JANUARY 9TH, 2015.
Entrance to HCHS is by exam only. The exam is open only to students who are New York City residents. Students must qualify to take the Entrance Exam by achieving qualifying scores on 5th grade NY State-wide tests. The qualifying score changes each year.
THE ELIGIBILITY SCORES FOR THE 2015 ENTRANCE EXAM ARE 357 MATH AND 346 ELA. APPLICATIONS WILL BE AVAILABLE ON THIS PAGE ON SEPTEMBER 22, 2014.
ONLY STUDENTS WITH ELIGIBLE SCORES IN BOTH SUBJECTS WILL BE SEATED FOR THE ENTRANCE EXAM. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS REQUIREMENT.
Students in independent and parochial schools must have scored in the 90th national percentile of the Reading Comprehension and Math tests used at their schools and have those scores reported directly to the Admissions office.
AN ONLINE APPLICATION FOR HCHS WILL BE AVAILABLE HERE ONCE THE ELIBILITY SCORE HAS BEEN SET IN EARLY FALL.
We will arrange a qualifying examination for students for whom no scores are available (if they were sick on the testing days or if their home school does not require annual testing), if the principal of the home school submits a letter of recommendation with evidence of the student’s academic qualifications to the Admissions office.
Your child MUST have the qualifying scores on the NY State exams or the 90th national percentile or above on tests used at his/her independent school, There are no exceptions to the eligibility requirements and we will not respond to requests for exceptions in any case.
How to Apply to HCHS
At the bottom of this page there is a link that will direct you to the HCHS online application. You must have an email address to complete an application for your child. If you are applying for twins, you must have two unique email addresses to complete applications separately for each one.
At the application page, select "I am applying to 7th Grade" and click “Create Application”. Read the next page in its entirety. You must check the checkbox regarding use of email, provide the email address you will be using for the application and click "Get Application ID". An email will be sent to you from firstname.lastname@example.org with the information that you need to proceed. If you do not receive it in a few moments, check your Junk Mail box. Either click the link in that email OR copy and paste it into your browser.
Fill out the application. Fields in red are mandatory. Be sure to enter your child’s test scores – they will be verified with your child’s school by HCHS to ensure that your child is qualified for the exam. Children whose scores cannot be verified will not be seated for the exam. Click “Save” when you are done. You can come back and “Edit” a saved application.
Once you have completed the application, click “Submit”. This will take you to the payment page (“Checkout”). Read the notes and select either “Application Fee” ($70.00) or “Reduced Application Fee” ($35.00). Click “Go!”. The fee is non-refundable.
Students who qualify for free or reduced price lunch may apply for a reduced administrative fee for the entrance exam. Online applications must be paid at the time of submission. You must pay the reduced fee of $35.00, then follow the instructions to mail in supporting documentation for BOTH parents. If you receive a notice that your application has been rejected, you must pay the balance of the $70.00 administrative fee BY MONEY ORDER as soon as you receive notice. Without proper payment, your child’s application will be considered incomplete. Until payment is made, your child will not receive a ticket for the exam. If you feel your application has been rejected in error, please send the additional documentation to support your request. Applications are often rejected when a tax return indicates assets (i.e. savings) that would enable a family to pay the fee, regardless of annual income.
On the next page, click “Checkout”. If you are paying by credit/debit card (recommended), your billing address information will appear in the address fields. Be sure that this information is the BILLING address for the card you are using. Fill out all fields completely. Click “Review Order”. If all information is correct, click “Submit Order”. You will receive a screen with information for the next steps of the process. Remember that this is a non-refundable fee. You may print this screen, but the information will also be sent to you in an email. You will also receive an email receipt for the order.
PLEASE CHECK BACK ON SEPTEMBER 22ND WHEN THE LINK TO THE HCHS APPLICATION WILL BECOME AVAILABLE
If you need assistance completing the application, the best and fastest way to contact the Admissions Office with questions is to send an email to:
HCHSAdmit@hccs.hunter.cuny.edu. In your email, please include your name, your child’s name, your child’s school, and a daytime phone number where you can be reached.
THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING AN ONLINE APPLICATION FOR YOUR CHILD IS FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 7th, 2014 AT 4PM. THE APPLICATION SYSTEM WILL CLOSE AT THAT TIME.
The Day of the Entrance Exam
Tickets for the exam will be sent via email by mid-December. If you do not receive a ticket for the exam by December 12th, 2014 please send an email with your child’s first and last names, home address, and your phone number to HCHSAdmit@hchs.hunter.cuny.edu so a duplicate can be mailed to you.
The 2015 test will be given on JANUARY 9TH, 2015 at one of three locations:
HCHS at 94th St. between Park and Madison Avenues
Hunter College – West Building at 68th St.and Lexington Avenue
Hunter College – North Building at 69th St. between Park and Lexington Avenues
Your child will be assigned a location and room for the Exam and both child and parent will receive tickets for admission to the Exam. You will also receive information about assigned pick up and drop off times and locations, and comprehensive information about test day.
We do not have a visitation program for prospective students. Those offered admission or placed on the wait list will be invited to Hunter Day on the afternoon of March 18th, 2015, a program introducing parents and students to all aspects of academic and student life at the school. Information about Hunter Day accompanies all letters of admission and offers of places on the wait list.
Students are required to accept or decline their offers of admission within one week of the Hunter Day program.
